17 miles east of Hyrum at the head of Blacksmith Fork Canyon, backcountry roads fork east to Randolph, north to Bear Lake, or south to the Monte Cristo area.
Diamond Mountain Plateau and in Brown's Park
Between Dinosaur National Monument and the Green River, one can explore the rugged scenic terrain where Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch wandered. Seventy miles south of Ouray are the wild Book Cliffs, off the beaten path by anyone's standards.
The Great Basin
The Great Basin offers solitude and vast open stretches for off-highway exploration, and some demanding mountain terrain as well. In the northwestern part of the state, the old Railroad Bed Road, a remnant of the first transcontinental railroad, which was completed in 1869, continues west from Promontory to SR 30. Use caution.

The Oquirrh Loop Tour
This trail begins in Salt Lake and takes secondary paved roads to several historic sites and ghost towns. Thirty miles south of Tooele, the historic Pony Express Trail extends west for 150 miles through rugged sagebrush terrain and small mountain ranges to the Nevada border. Many beckoning off-road trails fork from the Pony Express Trail.

Description: Elevation 5000 - 5400 feet. These rolling dunes are comprised of 60,000 acres of free-moving sand dunes, sagebrush flats, and juniper-covered hills. The dunes are an ideal dune-buggy playground, while the sagebrush flats and surrounding mountains are a challenge for motorcycles and 4-wheel drive vehicles.

Description: This drive ascends to the middle of the Abajo Range, at an elevation of 11,000 feet. This is a cool retreat from the desert heat in the summertime, and opportunities for hiking and climbing are numerous. One of the trailheads from the road is for the Abajo Peak trail, which leads to the summit of Abajo Peak, at 11,360 feet. There is no developed camping on the route, but there is a campground right past the end of the Backway, on FR 105. Views from the heights of these mountains include Canyonlands National Park and many distant mountain ranges. Fishing in Johnson Creek, on the south half of the drive.

Description: 5500 ft. elevation. 8 tent sites in a wooded setting at the south end of the Pahvant Range. Fishing in Corn Creek, 1 group camping area. There is an amphitheater for interpretive programs or for camper use.

Description: This 2 mile track has long fast straits, soft, sandy climbs. Bunker Hill offers great elevation changes: 100 foot up hill triple and a 50 foot down hill double.

Description: Elevation 9400 feet. 10 camp sites. Anderson Meadow Reservoir provides good small reservoir fishing opportunities, though no motorized boating is allowed. Trails nearby offer boundless exploration for hikers, equestrians, and ATV riders, including a spur to the Paiute ATV trail. Horses and ATVs are not allowed in the campground.
Directions: From Beaver travel 18 miles southeast off UT 153; 10 miles on UT-153 then 8 miles on Forest Road 137.

Description: The Arapeen trail system contains miles and miles of four-wheel drive roads and ATV trails across the Wasatch Plateau. Trail sections range from easy to very challenging; a system of trail markers clearly denotes difficulty.
